SONGS: Shakira - Brazil 2014

Hi guys!

So, Shakira made a very nice song and an amazing video clip for Brazil 2014. It's not an official video by FIFA but it's cool, more than 16 million people already watched it... so it's here.

I'm a big fan of Shakira, hope you enjoy it!

Oh, Milan, her son is also in the video, very cute kicking a ball, showing talent just like daddy, Piquet!

Have a good weekend!

Songs: Engenheiros do Havaii

Today we will listen to a band formed in Porto Alegre in 1985, one of my favorite Brazilian Bands, Engenheiros do Havaii that in Portuguese means Engineers of Hawaii. The guys were students of architecture and the name of the band is a joke.

"The band also was a success at the controversial Rock in Rio II, being the only Brazilian band positively mentioned by The New York Times." iTunes Store

The singer / songwriter Humberto Gessinger is a very intelligent and multitalented man who contributed a lot to the band. Since 85 he is the only original integrate of the band.

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Songs: Wave - Tom Jobim

Bossa Nova

For those who are in love, or want to fall in love one of my favorite songs ever.

Wave was composed by Tom Jobim in 1967.
This version is sang by his daughter Maria Luiza Jobim and his grandson Daniel Jobim.

The song also got an English version sang by Frank Sinatra... check it out!

So close your eyes for that's a lovely way to be
Aware of things your heart alone was meant to see
The fundamental loneliness goes
Whenever two can dream a dream together

You can't deny
Don't try to fight the rising sea
Don't fight the moon the stars above and don't fight me
The fundamental loneliness goes
Whenever two can dream a dream together

When I saw you first the time was half past three
When your eyes met mine it was eternity

By now we know the wave is on its way to be
Just catch the wave don't be afraid of loving me
The fundamental loneliness goes
Whenever two can dream a dream together

Songs: Jota Quest

To close the mineiro week nothing better than a band from the city we have been talking about: Belo Horizonte.

Jota Quest is a pop-rock band that chose this name inspired on the cartoon Jonny Quest by Hanna-Barbera. The band was formed in 1993 and since they recorded their first album in 1996 they have been a great success. Well, as every mineiro, the guys are very charismatic and when they start singing everyone sings along.

The band is on the road since 1994, and they have always been a great success in Brazil. Their music is a nice mix of hip hop, pop, reggae and samba. Their lyrics protest against the social problems occurred in Brazil and these very musicians are always supporting social projects.

Songs: Ivete Sangalo

When Ivete was the Banda Eva's leader and vocalist, from 1993 to 1998, the band sold more than 3,75 million copies, in 1999 she left the band and since then the success of her solo career only increased, and she became the biggest Brazilian artist. Ivete is the queen of carnival in Bahia, a singer, songwriter, and actress who connects with her fans in a way that no other artist can do. She calls them by their names, meet them after her concerts, she is the most charismatic artists you've ever seen. That's why she became so famous and so loved by Brazilians and her international fans.

oficialivetesangalo
In 2007 Ivete performed at Maracanã to over 50 thousand people to record her DVD "Multishow ao Vivo - Ivete no Maracanã", it was the best seller DVD of 2007 in the whole world, selling more than 600 thousand copies.  Here you can watch her singing Corazón Partío with the renowned Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz.

In 2010 Ivete performed at Madison Square Garden to 15,000 people. On the day after her performance The New York Times published: "She was indefatigable onstage, doing fast samba footwork in high heels through a three-hour set".
Watch her performance at The Garden:

"Ms. Sangalo strutted through the routines of an arena diva with spirit. Yet after the confetti shower and the big exit — ascending with a bunch of balloons — she came back for another unchoreographed half-hour that was thoroughly Brazilian and the best part of the concert. With her band somehow picking up cues amid the crowd, she vaulted through a half-dozen carnival songs, full of references to the streets and neighborhoods of Bahia’s capital, Salvador, with the whole arena singing along. Even in New York she was playing to a home crowd". (The New York Times)

SONGS: Skank

I've chosen this band for today's post because they are one of my favorite Brazilian bands. Skank's songs are always present in nice moments of our lives, they are considered a pop/rock band but usually they mix reggae beats and the result is great. Hope you enjoy!

multishow.globo.com
The band was formed in 1991 in Belo Horizonte, the songs on their first album were very original, they introduced reggae beats to their pop songs, and this mix worked very well. They became famous quite quickly. Their second album in 1994 sold more a million copies. With their third album "Samba Poconé" they were invited to play in many European countries, in South America and US.
In 2010 they recorded a DVD at Mineirão, one of the stadiums that will receive matches during Confederations and World Cup.

They have won the Multishow Brazilian Music Award for best song, best concert, and Samuel Rosa has won as best singer in 2010.

Watch the video of their show at Mineirão, Belo Horizonte: Skank - Jackie Tequila

More... they will play at Rock in Rio in September.

SONGS: Sandy Leah & Seu Jorge

This Saturday I introduce you to Sandy Leah…

Sandy by UOL
This petite woman with an incredible voice started her career when she was just a little girl, for 17 years she sang in duet with her brother and in 2007 they decided to follow different paths, in 2010 she started her solo career.

Her name was chosen after her mom watched Grease, starring Olivia Newton-John. So far Sandy already sold 17 million copies in her entire career, she has sang with many renowned artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Enrique Iglesias, Jason Mraz, the British Nerina Pallot, Caetano Veloso, among others. Her father is also a well-known country singer in Brazil. Besides singing, she is a song writer, producer and worked many times in TV and cinema. Sandy is married to a multi-talented Brazilian musician, Lucas Lima. Seems like much for a 30 year old, but not for Sandy! She is going far. If you fell in love with her, as I did, access her web site for more at Sandy Oficial

Sandy & Seu Jorge

Seu Jorge defines himself as a singer and popular songwriter who likes numerous musical genres, in which the basis is samba. "Samba is our truth, our particularity, our gold medal, our fortress, our Brazilian flag". Before starting his solo career he was part of the band Farofa Carioca, which became famous in Rio first, where he is from, then around Brazil and few other countries. Seu Jorge also starred in many movies, but his international fame came after Cidade de Deus, a Brazilian movie known worldwide, that shows the reality in the favelas specially because of the drug cartel. Nowadays Seu Jorge is an icon, representing our culture around the globe with his style and voice that has huskiness and got sensuality.
In the video clip above Sandy invites Seu Jorge to sing her song. I choose this version because this mix of São Paulo and Rio ended up amazing, as you can see, their voices together have the perfect blend!

Ipanema is a famous neighborhood located in Rio.
Heloisa Pinheiro, a 19 year old girl would pass everyday in front of the Veloso Bar where Vinicius and Tom wrote the song, towards Ipanema Beach and also in her regular routine, giving them inspiration for this beautiful song. Nowadays that very bar is called Garota de Ipanema located at Rua Vinicius de Moraes, 49 in Ipanema.

In 2004 the Library of Congress selected Girl from Ipanema as one of the 50 songs to join the list of National Recording Preservation Board as a song of cultural and historical importance for the United States of America.
